First Participation at ANUGA: A Key Step Toward Global Expansion

Our drive for international expansion was unstoppable. After the success we achieved the previous year in Paris and the United States, our goal was to solidify our presence in foreign markets. We proudly joined the prestigious Italia Food & Wine collective with two partner companies, securing a prominent space at the world’s largest trade fair, ANUGA, in Cologne, Germany. Participating in ANUGA opened the doors to new markets, allowing us to meet with key international buyers with whom we have established long-lasting collaborations that continue to this day. Since then, our presence at ANUGA has become a tradition, as we recognize the vital role this event plays on the global stage of the food industry. It is a must-attend occasion for us, providing the perfect platform to strengthen our commercial network and expand business opportunities on a global scale.

Rosanna: A Pillar of Our Growth

In 2010, we welcomed a key figure into our team for the future of the company: Dr. Rosanna Ferriero, a Food Technology graduate and tireless mother. She was entrusted with one of the most critical roles: quality assurance, a cross-functional role that requires continuous interaction with every department, from procurement to sales, ensuring everything runs smoothly. Although she came from a smaller company, we immediately recognized Rosanna's extraordinary potential. By investing in her continuous training, we knew she would deliver excellent results. And that’s exactly what happened: every audit we’ve undergone has achieved top marks, thanks to her constant, precise, and meticulous dedication. What amazes me the most is how she manages to skillfully keep everything under control, not just in our company, but also in her family, where she coordinates four men with balance and precision! I’m proud to work alongside her, and I extend my heartfelt compliments to this Super Woman in every sense!

The Collaboration with Food Bloggers Begins: A Journey into Flavor

In the early 2010s, a digital transformation marked the rise of the first influencers, and in our sector, chefs and food bloggers became the stars. They were ordinary people who passionately began to photograph, describe, and share what they cooked, creating a vibrant culinary movement. Thus, we decided to create a small but significant platform on our website, foodblogger.ficacci.com, which is still alive and thriving today. Here, cooking enthusiasts can build their personal showcase, receive our prized olives for free, and publish recipes that must include at least one olive among the ingredients. Visitors to the site are not just spectators but active participants: they can vote on recipes and enter the instant-win contest to take home our olives. For every certain number of votes and published recipes, food bloggers earn the prestigious "Ficacci Spoon," which can be used to request new samples of olives. This exciting project has involved more than 55 food bloggers, who have published a remarkable 1,173 recipes featuring our olives on ricette.ficacci.com. It has been truly incredible! This journey has brought us closer to a community of enthusiasts and reminds us how beautiful it is to share a passion for cooking..

David Dottorini, Our Export Manager

In 2012, our international sales were growing significantly. We began by exporting to nearby European countries and soon expanded to other continents in the following order: America, Australia, Oceania, Asia, and Africa. To support this international growth, we needed someone dedicated full-time to the expansion project. That's when we opened the selection for our company’s very first Export Manager, a crucial addition to our sales team. David responded to a job advertisement we posted on Facebook.com/ItalianOlives . He introduced himself as a native English speaker from Ireland with experience in multinational companies. After meeting him, we quickly realized that he was someone exceptional. We often share his incredible career journey with clients during dinners; few people have held such a diverse range of roles in a single lifetime. Here are just a few highlights: in 1983, he was a graphic designer; in 1989, he sold refreshments at Rome’s Olympic Stadium; in 1995, he wrote his Geology thesis at the Pratola Peligna Observatory; and in 1996, he worked as a marshal at MotoGP. A year later, he was setting up offices at Fiumicino Airport, and in 1998, he hitchhiked across the United States, even sitting in George W. Bush’s chair in Texas! In 2000, he taught at a high school and mapped GPS routes for Google Maps across Italy. In 2002, he had a cameo in the film *Caterina in the Big City,* spent six months in Japan in 2003, and in 2005, he was an assistant to director Nanni Moretti while also performing with his band, “Rastabelli,” on the island of Ventotene and even in Belfast. And this is just a sample of his experiences. With such a rich profile, we couldn’t resist hiring him. We were impressed by his eloquence, cultural knowledge, and adaptability. Although he had little direct experience in international sales, he learned quickly and enthusiastically. Today, David is a key part of our sales team. Clients appreciate him for his exceptional attention to commercial operations and his ability to entertain them during the many international events we attend. Well done, David! Here’s to continuing our journey together toward global success, one olive at a time!

Maurizio Rosati, with us since 2012

In 2012, a shy boy named Maurizio Rosati joined the factory seeking employment. He began as a loading and unloading worker and gradually worked his way up through various departments. One anecdote that left a strong impression on me was when, in his early months with us, he took the initiative to purchase some texts on table olives because he wanted to learn more about this area, which was unfamiliar to him. That moment made me realize I could count on him, and time has proven me right. Maurizio has since covered many functions in different departments and has shown himself to be an invaluable asset. He is always available to help others, approachable, and generous. Today, he independently manages the pitting plants. Having him as part of our big family makes me very proud.

50 Years of Growth and Passion

In 2014, we celebrated an extraordinary milestone: 50 years of operation. This journey has been marked by significant successes and challenges, which we have transformed into valuable growth experiences through determination. A decade ago, I had the opportunity to share the most critical stages of my professional career, which is inextricably linked to my personal life. Today, looking back with pride and gratitude, I recognize that our achievements resulted from collective effort. This effort included my wife, my most trusted collaborators, and, more recently, my three children, who have all contributed diligently to making our reality even more significant. As I look to the future with the same passion and vision that have always guided me, I also gaze at my four grandchildren with the hope that they will find and pursue their dreams one day. This path, filled with satisfaction and lessons, was built with all those who believed in me and our project.

Melvin D. Maddux, the enormous!

Today, I have to share a story that jumps a decade to 2018, when we met Melvin, a genuinely enormous man despite his stature. Melvin possessed many qualities, but the one I appreciated most was his incredible ability to connect people or companies in ways that could advance a shared mutual success story. We traveled to New York for the Summer Fancy Food Show with my wife, a couple of very good friends, my son Giuseppe and his family, and the export team; it was essentially a work "vacation." During the fair, we eagerly awaited an appointment with Melvin. The wait was excruciating. Busy-Man-Melvin was always busy, postponing our meeting day after day, often to the end of the day. By the last day, Giuseppe was feeling despondent; it seemed our opportunity had slipped away. After the show concluded, we piled into an Uber van to head back to the hotel when Giuseppe suddenly received a message from Melvin: “Come see me, at my booth.” Yes, he had put us to the test! As I got to know him better over the years, I became convinced he wanted to see our commitment to this new business. He was assessing our humbleness and whether we could set aside personal pride to focus on building a meaningful business relationship. Without his jacket and tie, Giuseppe immediately hopped out of the Uber and joined Melvin at the show. This began a significant relationship for our company with Gourmet Foods International and a beautiful, sincere friendship for our family with him. Melvin was unique, empathetic, stubborn, determined, intelligent, visionary, honest, exemplary, demanding, and uncompromising. He was always humble, polite, and attentive to everyone, from CEOs to workers. He always had a thoughtful and encouraging word for each of us. I speak in the past tense because, sadly, on October 24, 2024, Melvin departed. He left a vast and unfillable nothingness in our lives and hearts. I wanted to share this story because he would have appreciated reading it on LinkedIn. He never missed an opportunity to narrate this tale whenever he introduced Ficacci to a new vendor approaching him. He used it as an example of patience, unpretentiousness, and a cautionary tale for those who were too hurried with over-expectations. He was a valuable and stimulating partner for our company, a sincere friend to our entire family, and an extraordinary mentor to my son Giuseppe, further than a big friend. I want to conclude with Melvin's saying, which I have always held dear and which has guided all his business relationships: "You can find the most cutting-edge company in the world with the best innovative product, but if there isn’t a strong relationship with responsive individuals capable of adapting to market demands, the projects will always fail." We will miss you, Melvin.
